Many thanks to Lorna Coots who sent me a photo of the memorial to Edie’s niece, Mary Elizabeth Appleton Ledger, who died tragically in June 1928, aged only 19. She drowned in the sea off Boulogne trying to save the life of a Frenchman. Here below is the memorial in Northbourne Church in Kent.
