List of all names mentioned in the diaries

Welcome to this page on Edie’s website. This may be the place where you will find the name of your relative: a soldier, medical staff, patient or one of the many people named by Edie in her diaries.  We have done our best to trawl through the 400 plus pages of her diaries for all those names and we think we have found most of them.

One of the most rewarding aspects of putting the diaries online has been the occasional contact from people who have recognised their relative. It is amazing that, 100 years after Edie spent those five years nursing in France (from October 1914 until she was demobilised on 22 December 1919), these reunions are occurring. We welcome your getting in touch. Please use the Visitors’ Book or email me at ediesdiaries@gmail.com.

For some of those listed below (about 30 at the last count) I have done a separate individual page. You can see them all listed here.

Dick Robinson – Edie’s great nephew.

The names list may be best viewed on a desktop computer

The names are listed in four categories:

    1. Medical staff: Doctors, Matrons, Sisters, Nurses, V.A.Ds. etc
    2. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen: Officers, other ranks, (including forces of other countries)
    3. Others ( a wide variety of names of other people mentioned)
    4. Family and friends of Edie

We have now indexed all four volumes of the diaries as well as the three early letters.

Early Letters (ELs). Here is the link: http://anurseatthefront.org.uk/introduction-to-the-diaries/early-letters/

Four Volumes of Diaries. For more information on accessing the full original versions please click here.

'Other' refers to some other page on the website and is given a direct link.

If you see the name of a relative of yours or a unit in which you are interested, make a note of the date(s), then click on the link above for the appropriate volume and scroll through that volume to find the date. Please use the Visitors' Book if you would like to tell us more about the person or unit. We have already received some amazing contacts from descendants of those mentioned.

The list still needs checks for accuracy. We are very happy to receive any corrections or, if you have further information which will improve the list; for example first names of people where they are missing or links to entries in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Register. Again please use the Visitors' Book.

Items in blue mean that we are uncertain whether the entry in the diary is about that person. Those in red signify some uncertainty about who the individual might be.

Information in purple italic is kindly supplied by Sue Light who has been a wonderful source of information and encouragement. See this page on Sue's website regarding tracing descendants: http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/147.html.
